The Great Gatsby Info.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fitzgerald had a romantic imagination and once called it "a heightened sensitivity to the promises of life." He attended Princeton University for 4 years but left just before graduation for the army during world war 1. While camped at Camp Sheridan, he meet Zelda Sayre. They were going to get married but didn't have the finances to do so. They broke their engagement. Fitzgerald then wrote The Side of Paradise. This made him wealthy and famous. He then married Zelda. Later on, the family moved to France. This is where he began The Great Gatsby. You can see Fitzgerald's own nature in this story. It is  represented in the character Jay Gatsby and the narrator Nick Carraway. Jay represents Midwesterner who is amazed at the possibilities of the american dream. Nick represents a Princeton gentleman who can't help but be suspicious by the dream. This story was the most famous of all of Fitzgerald's books.  Fitzgerald moved away from his wife and became an alcoholic.
That quote means that the writer has to be able to write for all different age groups and different generations. The story has to relate to different age groups and times so that everyone can understand the book for many generations. It also means that it is well enough understood that it could be taught.
Some main events in the 1920's was the passing of prohibition law banning the consumption of alcohol and the great depression, which came about from the stock market crash. The 19th amendment was passed, which gave women the right to vote.
This means I have erected a monument more lasting than bronze.

Red Badge of Courage Thesis

In the book Red Badge of Courage, Henry wants glory and will do anything to get it.

In the last major battle that Henry was in, he went and grabbed the flag when it was laying on the ground and began to charge. He was praised for this by many of his fellow soldiers and his leader. "The youth had centered the gaze of his soul upon that other flag. Its possession would be high pride (Crane 23)." This quote proves that the only reason why Henry went and risked his life to get the flag was to get praised by people higher up. He carried the flag around even when they were resting on the fence post. He laid it right next to him so everyone could see the flag. The regiment ended up winning the battle in large part because of the charge Henry led.

Before Henry actually went to the war, he said he was looking forward to impressing the girls when he came back. "As he basked in the smiles of the girls and was patted and complimented by the old men, he had felt growing within him the strength to do mighty deeds of arms (Crane 1)." What motivated Henry the most was smiles and the compliments he would get from all the girls. He should have been thinking of what was ahead and how to help the army instead of thinking the praise he will get. Henry just wanted the glory and to brag to all the girls in the town of his couragous acts in war. He wants people of the town to look up to him for all his accomplishments. If everyone knew what he did, he would not get the praise he desired.

Henry fought very hard in a lot of fights to impress his fellow soldiers. "He lay and basked in the occasional stares of his comrades (Crane 17)." His comrades were staring at him because the red rage overtook him during battle and he couldn't stop killing the enemy. He knew he did something very good in battle and people were talking about his great battle. They would stare at him talk about the job he did. Henry noticed the staring and took it all in. He loved the attention he was getting for his fighting. He was getting the glory at this point, just like he wanted.

Chapter 24

Abstract: Henry and his regiment are told to march back toward the river. On the way over there, Henry thought to himself all the experiences he had during battle. He was a little mad at himself for being a coward and being selfish in the beginning. He is mad at himself for the bad things he did. He finally puts things in perspective and gets over the guilty thoughts in his head. He knows he is now different. As the story ends, a ray of sunlight breaks through the clouds.
Response: I believe that the ray of light was significant. The clouds represented all the darkness and bad things that have happened and the ray of light represented the good breaking through the evil or the bad things that have occurred. Henry went through a lot in this story. He has done some bad things but he got over them. That shows a sign of maturity. He knows he did something wrong but he can't take it back. He can just control the future, not the past. Henry understands this and is a better soldier because of it.
Question: Is the war over now?

Chapter 23

Abstract: In the beginning of this chapter, Henry and his regiment are still fighting. They are having a tough time with enemy. They decide that they have to move forward and charge because they can't go backwards. The men were very tired and weary. Henry had to motivate them and they charged, giving their last little bit of energy. They fought and won the battle somehow. Wilson grabbed the flag during the battle. After the battle was over, they were very excited from the victory. They celebrated and then the laid down by an old rail fence in the long grass. He laid the flag on the fence and Wilson came over. They sat side by side and congratulated each other on the victory.
Response: Henry and Wilson seem almost as if they are invincible. They have both gone through many battles and killed many people but yet are barely even injured. Henry has a little mark on his head but that is it. They seem like they can do no wrong at this point in the story. Henry is a completely different person now. He leads his group into battle and motivates them when they are fighting. Before he was thinking of ways to escape the army. He is now more of a leader of that regiment than their assigned leader is. Henry and Wilson are keeping that regiment going.
Question: What motivated Henry to become the leader of the group?

Chapter 22

Abstract: The praise Henry got helped him in the next battle. As the battle keeps going of, Henry's regiment begins to thin. Henry begins to just watch the battle around him. He gets taken in from the battle. Henry maintains his position on not retreating. He wants to prove to the commander who called them mule drivers and mud diggers wrong. Many soldiers are getting hit and falling to the ground. Henry says that Wilson and the lieutenant are still ok, but their regiment is weaking.
Response: I believe that they should retreat. They are putting way to many lives in danger and they need to get out of there. They should live to fight another day. They are no good to the army dead. You have to know when you have to give up and come back the next day. I know that would be hard to do because they would get even more grief from the commander but i believe you still have to retreat.
Question: Will they get any reinforcements?

Chapter 21

Abstract: In this chapter, The regiment returned. They were very proud of themselves for beating the enemy when odds were against them. The other soldiers make fun of them and this angers the 304th unit. The leader who called the group mule drivers comes to the front on horseback and says that they were mud diggers. This really upset Henry and the unit and they questioned their commanders. A couple soldiers come up with excitement on their faces and tell Henry and Wilson they may be the best fighters on the regiment, according to the colonel. They overheard the colonel say that. Both Henry and Wilson were deeply satisfied by this complement.
Response: The other soldiers made fun of the 304th unit when they returned back to the line. I think that they should have been congratulating the soldiers on their fine victory. I believe the other soldiers were just jealous. The commander also didn't complement them. He said they acted like mud diggers. That was no way to treat people who just won a battle for you. The commander had to eat his words a little bit because he said that they would all die. The unit actually won. Henry and Wilson are very proud and should be. The earned it.
Question: Why did the commander call them mud diggers?

Chapter 20

Abstract: After getting the flag, Henry and Wilson see the unit slowly moving back after their charge was stopped. The men fall back to a row of trees and are somewhat safe from the gunfire. Henry takes the flag from Wilson and the men go across the battlefield. They are getting heavily fired at. Henry really wants this victory so he can prove that they are not considered mule drivers. Henry pleads the men to fight, even though men are starting to leave. The enemy is upon Henry's regiment at this time. Henry tells himself that if the enemy wants to win they will have to fight for it. The units fights and succeeds in making the enemy retreat. The spirts are greatly risen after this great victory.
Response: This victory really helped the morale of this unit. They were beaten down and no one believed in them at all. Not even the general. This victory had to feel good to Henry and Wilson knowing that they defeated the odds and won the battle. Henry is now a great leader of his regiment. He pushes people to keep going and never gives up. He is the driving force behind that regiment and the hope for them. I think that if Henry is alive, the entire regiment will have a greater confidence and be in better spirits.
Question: How many soldiers are left in this regiment? They have been through two pretty big battles and another smaller fight.

Chapter 19

Abstract: Henry and Wilson are shocked by this accusation of not being a good fighting unit. They are even more surprised when the general says that he expects most of them to die. Henry and Wilson hurry back to there unit and say they are about to charge. They begin to organize into formation and Henry and Wilson think about what they heard. They keep the information to themselves and prepare for the charge. The men begin to charge into the enemy. Henry sees men in front of him get hit heavily by bullets. They keep on pushing forward even though they were stopped a couple times. Henry notices the regiment’s flag flying in front of him. He follows the flag. The soldier carrying the flag was shot and Henry and Wilson pick the flag up and continue to move forward.
Response: Henry is a completely different person now. He picked up the flag in the heat of battle and charged forward. That would take a lot of courage. He went from not even being a follower to being the leader of that unit. He is trying to prove that general who said that his unit doesn’t fight well wrong. So far in this chapter, they are proving that general wrong. The theme of this chapter has to be courage and doing the right thing. They didn’t tell anyone that there is a good chance that they will die. They just kept it to themselves. They also fight and pick up the flag and keep going on into the enemy lines.
Question: Why did they go into battle knowing they could get killed?

Chapter 18

Abstract: The troops begin to rest. During the resting period, the men hear a fellow soldier, Jimmie Rogers, crying out in pain. Wilson thinks there is a stream in the area so he decides to go get water. Henry goes with him to get water. They don’t see any water, but they found a place where they can see a big portion of the battle. They see the blue troops form and a general run an injured man over. As a general passes by, they hear the commanders and the general talking about what unit they don’t need. They decide they don’t need the 304th unit, which is the unit Henry is in. They said they do not fight well enough.
Response: I believe the theme of this chapter is betrayal. The general is going to put his soldiers in a situation where they have no chance of winning that fight. That is betrayal to me. He is sacrificing people if he does this. The soldiers are loyal to him and that is how he is going to repay them? By killing them? I don’t personally think that is right. I guess there is no mercy in war, not even for the people on your side. The general will probably do anything to win, including killing his own.
Question: Why do the leading officers want to send the 304th in to a battle they can’t win?

Chapter 17

Abstract: After the waiting ended, the enemy came upon a group of blue-uniformed men. Henry fights very hard, never retreating. He is aware of nothing beside killing the enemy. He goes awhile without even thinking of stoping. After awhile, he hears a fellow soldier laughing. He then notices that he was firing at nothing and the battle was over. The rest of the soldiers are in awe of Henry, including the lieutenant. Henry doesn't feel that he didn't do anything for his bravery. The soldiers congradulate the other soldiers and talk about how many soldiers the other army lost.
Response: Henry really proved himself to the other soldiers in this battle. He would never get respect from the other soldiers because of his age. They even call him the youth. I think that will stop. He was very couragous in battle. His rage that was explained seemed like the red rage that was earlier in the book. He was focused on one thing and one thing only and that was killing the enemy as fast as he could. Henry showed his courage during this battle and gained respect from other soldiers.
Question: Where did Henry find the courage?

Chapter 16

Abstract: The men are led to some trenches. Henry sees glimpses of gray-suited enemy soldiers, and his regiment is taken into the forest. Henry then complains that the reason why they have lost battles was because of the leaders of the army. When another soldier makes fun of him though, he gets quiet because he doesn't want to be exposed as a fraud. The lieutenant gets the men to a certain spot and says they will fight the enemy in minutes. The men wait to battle.

Response: This chapter is a chapter that sets up chapter 17. I believe there will be a big battle in the next chapter. I also have no idea why Henry is complaining about the leaders in the army. He ran away from battle and hid in the woods. He shouldn't be talking bad about his leader.
Question: Is Wilson going to fight in the upcoming battle?

Chapter 15

Abstract:In this chapter, Henry remembers the yellow envelop that Wilson wanted him to deliver to his family when he died. Henry was going to ask him but decided against it so Wilson wouldn't ask him about the previous day. He thinks that the envelop will help him against being caught. He isn't worried about future battles, thinking of himself as being unable to be killed. He thinks that the people that ran yesterday are not as good as him because he ran away with dignity and they fled wildly. Wilson then asked for his envelop back. Henry gave it back to him and Wilson was embarrassed. Henry feels bad for him and feels greatly superior to him. He just thinks about telling his mom and a girl from his hometown stories of the war.
Response: Henry is getting really arrogant and cocky for fighting in one battle. He thinks he is better than his friend Wilson. Henry is not a very honorable person. He needs to get his ego knocked down a little bit. He thinks that when he ran from battle that he ran with dignity and the others ran wildly. There is no such thing as running from dignity. He shouldn't be putting all the others down when he did the same thing as them.
Question: Why was Wilson embarrassed when he got the letter back?

Chapter 14

Abstract: Henry woke up and it was dawn. He said it felt like he was sleeping for a thousand years. He can hear fighting in the distance. Henry looks around him and thinks he is surrounded by dead people when it is actually just the other people in the camp. Wilson asks Henry how his head is doing. Henry says that it still hurts. Henry notices that Wilson is now sensitive and not loud anymore. They talk about the battle and Henry says that Jim is dead. Wilson then had to break up a fight. He came back to Henry nad said that the army lost more than half of the soldiers the day before. Wilson said they went into to the woods, but are starting to return, just like Henry.
Response: I bet Henry felt pretty bad when Wilson said that all the soldiers left and went in the woods, just like Henry. Henry knows he made a mistake by running and he will be more couragous from now on. If half of the army flees when they see battle, they have no chance of winning the war. I thought all the soldiers were excited to fight in the beginning of the story. Why are so many people running then?
Question: What made Wilson change from a loud person to a sensative person?

Chapter 13

Abstract: Henry began this chapter by walking toward the fire fearing that the soldiers would
tell on him for fleeing battle. He goes past sleeping soldiers and a loud voice tells him to stop. Henry recognizes him as Wilson. He tells Wilson he was shot in the head after being separted from the others. He is told to go to the corporal and the corporal says that he got grazed by a bullet. It only left a lump. Henry watches camp while Wilson gets a canteen of coffee. Wilson helps Henry by giving him a blanket for the night and a wet cloth. Henry drifed off to sleep. He was very grateful of his friend Wilson.

Response: Henry arrived at the camp and was told to stop. The guard was Wilson. Henry got very lucky it was his friend. Then he tells him he got shot in the head. Henry is very lucky to have a good friend like Wilson. Wilson gave him a blanket and something to drink. He did this after Henry left their group.
Question: Why was Wilson so nice to Henry?

Chapter 12

Abstract: In the beginning of this chapter, Henry sees that battlefield and sees the blue army getting overwhelmed by the enemy. They begin to charge and Henry panics. He sees a soldier retreating and asked him what was happening. The soldier told him to let go but when Henry didn't, he hit him in the face with a rifle. Henry falls to the ground. He meets a cheerful stranger who tells him where to go to get back to his camp. The stanger points at the campfire and disappears into the forest. Henry then realizes he never saw the man's face.
Response: I wonder who that man was. That really surprises me that he never saw the man's face. I would think that if he was talking to him that he would have seen his face. Was the man he was talking to an actual person? The other man hit him in the face when he asked him where to go. This "man" calmly pointed him in the right direction and told him everything that just happened. I would think that he would be a little shaken if he was just in battle.
Question: Was the man Henry was talking to a person?

chapter 11

Abstract: In the beginning of this chapter, Henry can hear the noise of battle growing. The excited soldiers make Henry feel inadequate. He says Henry wanted to out to battle but decided against it because he was not physical prepared to fight. He also had no rifle. Henry wants his side to lose so he could say he didn't go on purpose because he knew they would lose. He wishes all of his comrades to be sick because they have overcome every other defeat. Henry then calls himself very selfish for saying these things. Henry doesn't believe that the soldiers in blue could lose. He tries to come up with an excuse but can't. He is now afraid that when he returns, the soldiers at the camp will call him a coward.
Response: I understand in this chapter why Henry didn't want to go into that battle. He had no gun and was very weak. He wouldn't have been much help with no gun and no energy. Henry should still have no wished his fellow soldiers to be ill. You should never wish a person to be ill and to lose a battle, just so he could feel better about himself. Many people would die just so he could feel better. That is very selfish for him to say. He even calls himself selfish for saying something like that. Henry also is worried about being called a coward. Henry should be called a coward. He is never in battle and doesn't help his army at all.
Question: When is Henry going to go back to camp?

Chapter 10

Abstract: The wounded man is in awe of Jim strength before he died, wondering how he could run when his injury was that bad. Henry and the wounded man go away from the corpse. The wounded man then suddenly feels bad and Henry gets worried that he might die. The wounded man says he won't die because he can't. He has a family at home. He thinks Henry is his friend Tom Jamison and says he looks weak and he needs to see someone about his wound. The wounded soldier then says he saw a man get shot in the head. Henry then leaves the wounded man behind because he was mad. Henry is certain that the wounded man will die if left alone. The man yells at Henry to come back. Henry keeps walking and he thinks that he couldn't stand the thought of someone discovering his crime.

Response: Henry walked away from a man who needed him. That wounded man will probably die because he can't do anything for himself. He left a man who needed him. When will Henry actually help the army he is fighting for? He thinks about running away and then doesn't help a man who is dire need of him. He is going to have to handle being responsible for a man's death. I know i couldn't handle something like that. Henry needs to realize that the war is bigger than him and he should stop being so selfish. That man had a wife and kids and he just left him. His mother said do the right thing early in the book and to not shame their name. I believe Henry just shamed his name.
Question: Why did Henry run from the man in need?

Chapter 9

Abstract: In this chapter, Henry goes back to avoid al l the injured men. Henry got jelous of the hurt soldiers because they were hurt and he called it the red badge of courage. Henry wishes he had one. Henry sees a man that is just looking blankly at nothing. Henry then notices that it is Jim and Jim told him he got shot. Jim is afraid he will get ran over by artillery wagon and then Henry promises he will take care of him. Henry tried to lead Jim to the fields but Jim ran away. Henry runs after him but sees Jim collapse and then Jim died. The place were Jim got shot was showing when Henry got over to him. Henry said his wounds looked like a he got chewed on by a wolf. Henry got mad and clenced his fists and shakes them at the battlefield.

Response: Henry really felt the effects of war when he watched Jim collapsed. He saw his horrible wounds and said it looked like a wolf chewed him up. Henry got very angry from the death of his good friend Jim. Henry has seen dead people before but not someone who he knew and liked. Henry also said he wanted to have a red badge of courage, which I think is a wound. I believe Henry thinks he will get more respect if he got wounded. I think this is a forshadow of what is to happen later in the book.
Question: Why did Jim run away when Henry was trying to help him?

Saturday, March 7, 2009

Chapter 8

Abstract: In this chapter, Henry hears the sounds of battle and goes to check things out. When he goes to get a closer look at things, he sees wounded soldiers walking along the road. He joins them and a man with a bloody head and dangling arm began to talk to him. Henry wanted to get away from him, but he couldn't. The soldier kept talking about courage of the army and the pride of not running. He then asked Henry what was injured on him and Henry ran.
Response: This chapter was very interesting because the chapter is about what Henry has been thinking about. Henry has wanted to run for a very long time but then a injured soldier talked about how proud he was of the soldiers that stayed to fight instead of run. I think this conversation will have a great effect on Henry and he will now be more couragous.
Question: Henry has wanted to get away from battle for a long time. Why did he go towards the battle to get a better look?

Chapter 7

Abstract: In this chapter, Henry is having a hard time dealing with the battle that just happened. He is mad at those who stayed and didn't run with him. He thinks they are stupid for not running. He believes they should run with him. Henry thought that they were would have done the right thing by running so they can live and still help the army. Henry then goes into a forest grove and sees a dead body with the same uniform on that he does. He sees bugs crawling on his face. Henry takes off running expecting the dead soldier to call out to him.
Response: Henry talks about how he thinks that the soldiers who didn't run are stupid and should have run. I believe Henry is actually feeling guilty about running from battle and is trying to comfort himself by giving reason why he thinks he did the right thing. He knows that he should have stayed to fight. Henry then goes into a grove and sees a dead body. He looks at it in terror and runs. I thought this symbolized that Henry is running away from death. He is trying his hardest not to think about it but he can't help to think about death.
Question: Why is Henry roaming around by himself? I would think that in war that would be dangerous.

Chapter 6

Abstract: This chapter begins with Henry being very relaxed and happy because they have just defeated their enemy. The entire group of soldiers that Henry is in is very happy and shaking hands with each other and just having a good time. Suddenly, the enemy came back and began charging. The soldiers, including Henry, began sprinting back to get away from the charge. They go far enough back to meet the riflemen. The general is giving directions to the riflemen and the charge was stopped. Henry was surprised by this.
Response: The soldiers should have been ready for anything. They were too busy celebrating their victory to notice they were getting charged at. The leader of the group even ran back with them. He is supposed to lead and he was ran back instead of giving direction. Henry didn't even have his rifle. He is no good to the army without his weapon. They were lucky enough to get back to their support before they were shot and killed. Henry probably grew a lot from this experience and figured out that he always needs to be ready.
Question: How did the enemy regroup that fast? I thought they retreated from the battle.

Quiz 1

1. What advice does Henry's mother give him?
2. What question is Henry struggling with?
3. What does the "dead soldier" represent?
4. What is the "red rage?" Describe.

1. Henry's mom told him to be safe and not do anything that she wouldn't be proud of. She wanted him to do the right thing.
2. Henry is struggling with being in the war. He always in thinking about trying to get away from the war. He is worrying about if he would run the first time he faced adversity in the war.
3.The dead soldier represents Henry's fear. He is always worrying about dying. This represents the future in the book. Henry saw the dead soldier and thought of him dying.
4. The "red rage" occurred when the soldiers were fighting. This is when they all lost control and acted inhumanely towards the other people. An uncontrollable rage came over the soldiers when they were fought and defeated the enemy in the battle.

Chapter 5

Abstract :The enemy finally reaches the soldiers. The begin to fight and shoot at each other. They are fighting and Henry forgets about his worries about getting away. He now gets a sense of belonging and continues to fight. He fought for a long time. The men began to sing a wild song as they were about to make the enemy retreat. The enemy finally retreated and they cheered because of the victory. Henry is suprised when he sees the sunset because nature still went on during the battle.
Response: I believe the theme in this chapter is courage. Henry built up the courage to fight and even forgot about trying to get away. That would take alot for a person to do. Seeing all those people shooting at you would really test your courage. From this experience, I think Henry will bond with all the other soldiers and forget about being an outcast. He will get more respect now. People always bond in times of crisis.
Question: Why did Henry think nature was going to stop during the war?

Chapter 4

Abstract: In chapter 4, the soldiers are in a grove with battle going on all around them. The leutientant got shot in the hand. The enemy is charging towards them and they are all reloading their weapons to prepare for battle. Henry is still doubting himself. He isn't thinking of the war. He is thinking of how to get away.
Response: The story is now starting to get alot more exciting. Battle is going on all around them and their leader even got shot. The enemy is coming towards them and still there is one thing on Herny's mind, which is how to get away from the war. He has a big issue with courage. That is definitely one personality trait that he needs to get over.
Question: Why is Henry still just thinking of getting away?

Chapter 3

Abstract: In this chapter, Henry is worried that they are going to get sneak attacked so he is very cautious and looks around at everything.  They didn't see anything. The next morning, Henry's gets woken up and hears the firing of guns. The regiment begins to charge. Henry was still very unsure if he should really be in the war. He had no choice because he was surrounded by other soldiers. Henry passes a dead body and worries that that could be him. After the battle, the soldiers began marching again and for a long time. The soldiers were getting mad because they wanted to fight instead of walk everywhere. Wilson then approaches Henry and gives him a letter to give to his family because he thinks he is going to die.
Response: Henry experienced his first battle in this chapter. His thoughts going into this battle were not what they should have been. He was just thinking of a way to get away. He then came to the conclusion that he couldn't escape the battle. He needs to be thinking of the war instead of how he can get away from it. He shouldn't have gone to the war in the first place. He can't handle being in war. He also went by a dead body and stopped. He was very vulnerable at this time and he needs to focus. He put other lives in danger by not paying attention.

Why was Wilson so sure that he was going to die?

Ch. 2 Characters

Wilson:  Claims he will do his part in the war. He is a soldier.
Jim: leader and was mistaken about the other army moving

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Chapter 2 Summary

Abstract: Henry and the rest of the soldiers realize Jim made a mistake. The other army is not moving. During this entire chapter, Henry still doubts that he has courage. The army was given orders to start marching, but don't see very much. They think they will never see any action. That night the soldiers set up camp. Henry is still feeling bad for himself and asks Wilson if he could imagine himself running away from the war. Wilson says " the man who bets on me running will lose his money, that's all." He leaves Henry and Henry now feels very alone.
Response: I think Henry needs to get over his fear and think about how he can help the army, not think about if he runs away. If they are in battle and Henry is not focused on the war, he has a good chance of dying and potentially there is a chance of him hurting others by not being focused. He really needs to concentrate on the war.
Questions: Where are the soldiers acting very childish?

Chapter 1 Characters

Henry: boy who wants to go to war
Mom: Henry's mom, she doesn't want him to go to war
Jim: leader and tells him what to do
Soldiers: Tell war stories

Chapter 1

Abstract : In the first chapter Henry wanted to be in the army really bad but his mom didn't want him to be. She kept making different excuses why he can't go in the army. Finally Henry just went into the army without permission. He told him mom and she tried to make the best of it. She gave him warm clothes and other things for the war. Henry then was in the army and he was talking to other guys in the army. Henry doubted himself during right before the war but then was reassured by the other guys.

Response: I thought Henry showed he was very courageous in going into the war. He went against what his mother told him and did it anyway. Some people might think that is disrespectful, but I believe he did what he wanted very badly. He wanted to fight in the war and help with the cause.

Question: What was he talking about when he was talking to the other men in the army?
